So, you want to change your job. The problem is that you don't have years of experience working in this industry. You don't know if it will take off or if you will be unemployed. Doubts are swimming in your head and you are thinking of staying at your current job.
But if you feel that a career change is what you need right now, you need to follow some necessary steps to be successful. Here are some tips for getting into a new factory on the board.
4 ways to break into a new industry
We will look at the story of an engineer who wants to become a mobile phone designer. The man graduated from university three years ago, she works in an engineering company. Now, another person wants to pursue her passion in the tech industry as a UI/UX designer. She has always been fascinated by the design and integration of mobile applications.
Do your homework: Research the industry
Everyone asked Jamie the same thing: “Are you sure about this? It will be difficult to enter a new field, especially since you have been working as an engineer for three years."
She decided to do homework and learn about the industry. Google has become her best friend.
She read a panel discussion about the opportunities and challenges faced by UI/UX designers. She looked at the average income of fashion designers and wondered if it could keep her. Some designers are independent. Some worked in mobile app development companies, while others were in-house designers focused on a specific app. These are her choices.
When she decided she loved the field, she immersed herself in articles and videos by UI/UX design gurus explaining their craft and showcasing their work.
She saw the talent of these gurus and paid for online courses ( there are plenty to choose from). It was decided to collect many resources and free tuition. And she got tools and software (like those in the tutorial) for her work.
She feels like a student again! Besides, at this time, she chooses what she wants to study and doesn't need to do all the unnecessary things. In addition, she received a certificate of completion for all the courses she completed. Through research, sh3 was able to express her thoughts about
industries and identify the skills and theoretical knowledge needed.
Task: Set aside two hours every day to study. Google "Online courses for [preferred industry/job]". Participate in YouTube videos, blog articles and forums. Keep a journal of the knowledge and skills you learn through these resources.
Get hands-on experience When she applied for a job, most job postings said applicants needed 1 to 3 years of experience...which she didn't have. She could start getting some experience now, though.
Eager to put her new skills into practice, she looked for gaps to fill. She still has to juggle her full-time job, but she uses every free moment to pursue design work. It was then that she became very famous.
She volunteered to develop the county's welfare code, providing a positive outlook. As she always felt she was not suitable for the user as it could be. So, she sat down with her customers and learned about their problems and goals with the app. Then, she gives her advice and consults with clients before she starts work. Most of the time, she has to review the tutorials and courses she has taken so that she can use them in her designs.
She also started offering design services to people around her. She chooses who she works for: connected people who can give feedback and spread the word about her. Sometimes they pay her a small amount, sometimes she doesn't charge them. She remembers how Gary Vaynerchuk said that gift work done strategically is important.
She collects her work in a portfolio along with the feedback she gets from happy customers. This will come in handy when she wants to apply for the job.
Google "private arms required in your country". Interact with customers and share your ideas with them. Pay attention to the people and businesses around you and plan ways your actions can add value to them. As you work, create a project proof file.
Contact your network
She also reached out to her friends and colleagues to ask about the tech industry, especially in developing apps. She sought advice and wisdom from them. They also recommend a few people in the field who can share what they know. One day while browsing the job listings, it occurred to her that one of her college friends was the founder of an art institute. She calls Tori, asking if she needs an artist on her team.
Tori didn't, but she knew of some tech companies that could. She asked for advice and her opinion on how she could break into this industry.
Tori was attending a tech startup event this weekend and asked him to check it out. Here she got inspiration from the work she saw. These are different from what she used to do in an engineering company. She left the meeting with a name card. She plans to strengthen her new network using social media and LinkedIn.
Tori started adding some of the people she met on LinkedIn with a message that she enjoyed meeting them - starting a relationship between them. She also looked at their resumes, certifications, and badges and started looking at free courses that could earn them the same certifications. She applied and continued to expand her network.
Also Find friends and family who may be connected to your industry. Connect, start networking and put yourself out there (Don't be shy!). Ask about job openings or events for additional networking opportunities. Find people in your industry on Linkedin, drop them a message saying why you want to connect with them. Find groups to join on LinkedIn - keep expanding your network.
Update your work Some of the mobile app development companies agreed to interview her. They are looking for an artist, they don't care if she will come from another factory, since she put in the work. She will also work with other designers who can show her around.
She started preparing for these questions. First, she had to update her resume which was optimized for her engineering application.
She was also able to identify the skills she gained in engineering that could be transferred to UI/UX design, so she updated her skills section accordingly. Engineering and UI/UX design both require critical skills such as research and analysis, problem solving, and technical design.
instead of elaborating on her past experiences related to engineering, she summarized them in short sentences. She filled out the experience section, detailing her volunteer and part-time work. Her portfolio is organized and she is ready to show her work in the interview.
Looking in the mirror every day, she asked some interview questions. In particular, she used a critical answer to the question: "Why are you leaving the engineering field?"
Al Mansoor, 18, said the best thing to do when entering a new industry with no experience is to be honest and courageous. There is no shortcut or right answer. She did these and got the job in a good company where she can take the first steps in a normal working environment.
Job: Build on your work experience in previous industries and elaborate on your experience in the new industry. Explain how the skills you gained in your current job are relevant and useful in the new job. Practice your answers for the interview, and be honest.
A final thought A complete career change into an uncharted territory is a very courageous thing to do.
However, most people find happiness in making a living through their passions and interests. Taking the first step in a new industry will take a lot of work and extra hours, as we saw in this man.
While we encourage you to follow your passion, leaving your current job should not be a decision made in haste. To be safe, make sure you have a savings account and a secure job before sending your resignation letter. These will lead to an easy transition to this new industry.
